Thecus Intros i8500 iSCSI NAS Device

11/20/2009 – Storing, securing, and managing data is vital for virtually every business today. With features like these, the i8500 is a digital stronghold for the corporate network.

But the i8500 is also built for flexibility. With online disk roaming, admins can easily remove the hard disks and install them into another i8500 unit while retaining all stored data. The i8500 can also support 32 host cluster connections per volume, which means that up to 32 users can access a particular volume simultaneously and offers a centralized data storage pool for even large organizations. The flexibility continues with support for Windows, MAC OS and Linux, as well as online volume expansion and migration, auto-rebuilding, and support for up to 256 logical volumes. Snappy system response is delivered by the onboard Intel� Xscale IOP Processor and 1GB of DDR RAM, which provides transfer speeds of up to 150MB/s with a single port and 190MB/s with dual ports.

HP to Acquire 3Com for $2.7 Billion

PALO ALTO, Calif., and MARLBOROUGH, Mass., Nov. 11, 2009

HP and 3Com Corporation (NASDAQ: COMS) (“3Com”) today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which HP will purchase 3Com, a leading provider of networking switching, routing and security solutions, at a price of $7.90 per share in cash or an enterprise value of approximately $2.7 billion. The terms of the transaction have been approved by the HP and 3Com boards of directors.

This combination will transform the networking industry and underscore HP’s next-generation data center strategy built on the convergence of servers, storage, networking, management, facilities and services. The resulting business outcome will help customers simplify the network, deploy a unique and innovative edge-to-core network fabric for the enterprise and improve IT service delivery capabilities, all delivered with best-in-class price-performance.

“Companies are looking for ways to break free from the business limitations imposed by a networking paradigm that has been dominated by a single vendor,” said Dave Donatelli, executive vice president and general manager, Enterprise Servers and Networking, HP. “By acquiring 3Com, we are accelerating the execution of our Converged Infrastructure strategy and bringing disruptive change to the networking industry. By combining HP ProCurve offerings with 3Com’s extensive set of solutions, we will enable customers to build a next-generation network infrastructure that supports customer needs from the edge of the network to the heart of the data center.”

“Our extensive product line and innovative technology together with HP’s breadth and scale will expand our global opportunity,” said Bob Mao, chief executive officer, 3Com. “3Com’s networking products are based on a modern architecture which has been designed to offer better performance, require less power and eliminate administrative complexity when compared against current network offerings. The acquisition of 3Com will dramatically expand HP’s Ethernet switching offerings, add routing solutions and significantly strengthen the company’s position in China – one of the world’s fastest-growing markets – via the H3C offerings. In addition, the combination will add a large and talented research and development team in China that will drive the acceleration of innovations to HP’s networking solutions.

3Com also brings to HP best-of-breed network security capabilities through its TippingPoint portfolio. For the past four years, TippingPoint has been the leader in Gartner’s “Magic Quadrant” in its evaluation of leading network security products. Approximately 30 percent of the Fortune 1000 companies have already deployed TippingPoint intrusion prevention systems.

“We are confident that we can run our entire global business of 300,000-plus employees, including our next-generation data centers, entirely on the new HP networking solutions,” said Randy Mott, executive vice president and chief information officer, HP. “Based on our experience and extensive testing of 3Com’s products, we are planning to undertake a global rollout within HP as soon as possible after the completion of the acquisition.”

Under the terms of the merger agreement, 3Com stockholders will receive $7.90 for each share of 3Com common stock that they hold at the closing of the merger. The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including the receipt of domestic and foreign regulatory approvals and the approval of 3Com’s stockholders. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of calendar 2010.

HP anticipates that the transaction will be slightly dilutive to fiscal 2010 non-GAAP earnings.

Is AMD's Bulldozer CPU 128-bit?

Scareware Tops Microsoft's Malware List

HP MediaSmart Server Review

As we complete the first decade of the 21st Century, home networks are becoming the norm and the rise of home servers is inevitable. Microsoft foresaw this and created Windows Home Server, a stripped-down version of Windows Server 2003 with a lot of ease-of-use features added and a storage system that is not available on it’s higher end products. HP is one of the OEM partners in the Windows Home Server market and manufacture several machines built around this OS, dubbed the MediaSmart Server (MSS). We were very fortunate that HP allowed to extensively test the EX487 model. [Editor's Note: since this article was written, HP has released two new MSS models: the EX490 & EX495] Does the MediaSmart Server have a place in the 21st Centrury home? These and other burning questions will be answered after the jump.The EX487 is a Celeron-based device in a mini-tower configuration with built-in removable drive-trays (two available). The unit is headless, with no ports for video or keyboard/mouse. It does have several USB ports and a network port. Powered by Windows Home Server, it has no need for a locally attached keyboard, mouse or monitor. Just plug it into the network, power it up, wait for the lights to turn blue, and load the client disc into your Windows PC (can’t use a Mac for this part) to get the party started.

One of the major reasons to get one these systems is for backup. The WHS client software can automatically backup your client data every night and you can even perform a bare-metal restore in can of total drive failure on a workstation. New to this version (and so far, outside of Apple’s Time Capsule, unique to HP) is the ability for the MSS to act as a Time Machine target for Mac clients allowing them to automatically back themselves up over the network.

If the system starts to get full (Windows clients get status messages), you can just pop in another drive and the server automatically add it to the drive cloud. Windows Home Server uses a software based file duplication system to make sure your data is safe. Adding drives, even mismatched sizes, just add to the pool of storage. Already filled up the bays? You have two choices here: add another drive externally via one of the 4 USB ports and/or 1 eSATA port, or take one of the smaller drives offline via the console and replace it with a larger drive. The system will automatically clear the old drive of data, making sure it is safe, and then rebalance after the new drive is added.

For the Windows-only home network, this system is a godsend. Backups can be performed even from sleeping workstations, and WHS anti-virus programs (like Avast Antivirus for WHS) can even monitor the state of the Avast clients on the network. In mixed networks (Mac & PC) the server talks to both clients reasonably well and allows for easy file sharing.

HP tacks on a few extra goodies such as automatic online backup of the WHS server data (caveat emptor: this system uses Amazon’s S3 storage cloud services to house the data and can get very expensive if you are a media professional using this system for storing your work. I stored my RAW files from a ballet I shot (close to 2,000 images) and the transfer costs for that month would have been over $230!), an iTunes server that really works, automatic video conversion and a host of others.

You can also add third-party server applications. I chose to add Frey Technologies’ SageTV server for WHS which allows you to record TV shows from your cable/satellite box and play them back on any PC/Mac on the network (with the client installed), remotely over the internet (with the streaming client installed), or on the living room TV with an extender client.

While the feature set and expandability are very impressive, I found a couple of shortcomings to this system.

First, for all it does, the system is a bit underpowered. Video conversion bogs the system down and if you install 3rd party apps (like SageTV) it will get bogged down even more. This requires you pick and choose what features you activate on the server. If you upgrade the SageTV to capture HD content, this server is woefully underpowered to stream the data. The files are recorded just fine and can be played locally, but streaming HD content results in skipping video. [Editor's Note: the newly released EX495 is powered by a dual-core Pentium and is likely more capable of streaming HD content.] Please note that if you capture in SD format, the system is more than adequate.

Second, the eSATA port does not support port multiplier enclosures and thus you are limited to 1 eSATA drive. This was the deal-breaker for me as I was planning on using a Weibetech external eSATA enclosure to add 4 more drives to my system.

Third, using this system as a Time Machine target requires that you pre-allocate all of the space used for TM at once. Also, the amount of space cannot exceed the size of any single drive. Don’t set it to duplicate that data or you will have no storage left.

Aside from that, the server is a solid piece of work. Extremely quiet and, if configured corectly, very capable of serving the needs of a home network very handily. I highly recommend it.

HP Redefines the Premium Notebook PC with ENVY

HP today redefines the premium notebook PC experience with the introduction of the HP ENVY sub-brand, which offers customers precision-crafted, high-performance models featuring HP Metal Etching and concierge service and support.

The new HP ENVY 13 boasts the brightest display in its class, and the HP ENVY 15 is the company’s fastest consumer notebook PC ever.

Breakthrough HP Metal Etching on the lid and palmrest of the ENVY 15, and on the palmrest of the ENVY 13, subtly signals luxury. The combination of materials provides exceptional mobility and a compelling metal look and feel, while using energy-responsible manufacturing methods.

The HP ENVY line – building upon the Voodoo ENVY legacy – includes leading-edge components optimized to yield power and performance. The lightweight heavyweight: ENVY 13

The ENVY 13 balances style and substance. Carefully crafted details inside and out will satisfy the cravings of demanding mobile customers.

The HP Radiance display is twice as bright as other notebook displays in its class – 410 nit (a measurement of display brightness) – and provides an exceptional movie and photo experience, even in high ambient light conditions. With 82 percent color gamut (versus standard 45-60 percent), photos appear richer with amazing color depth. Additionally, with fast 8-millisecond response time, customers can view movies with TV-like performance.

The ENVY 13’s strong performance is delivered in a small frame – less than an inch thin and weighing 3.74 pounds.(1) The exterior’s aluminum and magnesium construction provides durability in a sleek design. An etched-metal palmrest further sets the PC apart from others, and a VGA webcam(3) optimized for low light also is included.

ATI Switchable Graphics technology dynamically switches between ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4330 discrete graphics and the Intel� integrated graphics processor for either high-powered graphics processing or low power consumption for long battery life without booting the notebook. The Intel Core™ 2 Duo processor provides the power of dual processor cores while delivering extended battery life when the notebook is unplugged.

Versatile storage options include the ability to add two solid-state drives in a RAID-0 configuration to improve the overall speed of the ENVY 15 while providing excellent disk performance. Creative users will appreciate the ENVY 15 notebook’s performance and full versions of Corel� Paint Shop Pro� Photo X2 and Corel VideoStudio� Pro X2 for creating photo and video content.

Power users and gamers can take advantage of premium graphics performance via ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4830 graphics with 1 GB of dedicated video memory for visually intense applications, DirectX� 10.1 games and high-definition video playback.

A choice of two 15.6-inch HP Brightview high-resolution LED backlit displays, including the Full High Definition LED HP Ultra BrightView Widescreen Display with up to 300-nits brightness, provides a superb display experience for a notebook in this class. A Nightvision VGA webcam that is optimized for low-light or zero-light conditions is standard on the HP ENVY 15, incorporating an infrared LED that assists the webcam(3) by providing the necessary illumination in dark environments.

Designing the ENVY experience

The HP ENVY line includes a 360-degree approach to product design – from the products to the packaging:

Building upon HP’s success with instant-on technology, HP QuickWeb allows customers to access key applications without booting the PC. In less than 30 seconds, users can access the Internet, music, videos and photos, and email.(3)
HP Clickpad integrates the buttons into the touchpad and allows for fluid movements, while also allowing users to disable the clickpad if desired.
The keyboard’s direct-action keys (versus typical function keys) allow users to quickly access often-used commands such as print and volume adjustment.
Minimal desktop clutter and trial software adds to notebooks’ simplicity.

Apple Introduces New iPod nano With Built-in Video Camera

Apple Premieres iTunes 9

Intel Introduces Core i7, Xeon 3400 and First Core i5 Processors

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 8, 2009 – Intel Corporation introduced several high-performance desktop and server processors today, bringing the next level of integration and intelligence to computers. The new Intel Core™ i5 processor family, two new Intel Core™ i7 processors and the Intel� Xeon processor 3400 series bring Intel’s latest Nehalem microarchitecture to mainstream desktop and entry server markets.

New Intel� Core™ Processors for Consumers

Formerly codenamed “Lynnfield,” these new chips are based on Intel’s award-winning Nehalem microarchitecture and are designed for consumers who need top-notch performance for digital media, productivity, gaming and other demanding applications. These processors, along with the new Intel P55 express chipset, are available today.All processors are lead- and halogen-free1 and feature Intel� exclusive Turbo Boost Technology. The top-of-the-line Core i7 processors also support Intel� Hyper-Threading Technology. Combined, these features give computer users absolute “intelligent” performance when necessary and optimum power-efficiency when the computer is lightly loaded.

Computers Just Got Smaller

The new chipset brings the most revolutionary design changes since the invention of the PCI bus in the early 1990s and sets the stage for Intel’s forthcoming 2010 compute platform. Snow Leopard Users: Welcome to Driver Hell

As someone who has been tracking the trials and tribulations of the move to 64-bit computing, I would like to formally welcome all Snow Leopard users to a place often visited by 64-bit PC users: Driver Hell.

You all are probably just getting over the euphoria of installing the bright, shiny OS upgrade on your Mac(s).

I hear you.

Been there, done that.

Know what you mean.

You are probably now discovering that the esoteric bits of kit you have collected over the years do not all work. This is because, after all these years, Apple is finally obligating OEMs to provide 64-bit device drivers.

To their credit, you guys are faring much better that the PC crowd did 5 years ago when XP x64 was released. There were practically no drivers for anything beyond the most basic of devices in those days and sites like PlanetAMD64 (our sister site) maintain databases to this day to track down drivers for esoteric bits of kit.

Apple is also being more proactive by providing compatibility lists and, by virtue of the smaller universe occupied by the Mac, the likelihood of OEMs producing 64-bit drivers is very high. Too often the PC enthusiast encountered diffidence, lethargy, or outright hostility from device driver authors when queried about 64-bit drivers for Windows citing that their development resources were stretched too thin for such a niche market.

Niche no more, 64-bit drivers are de rigeur for Windows Logo Compatibility which was about the only way Microsoft could enforce the 64-bit requirement. Apple runs the same risks Microsoft did by allowing 32-bit backward compatibility in the OS: breeding complacency in the software market.

“Why should I take the time and effort to port my app to 64-bit when it runs just fine in 32-bit compat mode?”

Until developers see a need, like Apple forcing the 64-bit kernel + KEXTs in Snow Leopard Server, they won’t be bothered to do it. The moment that Mac OS 10.6.x or 10.7 runs ONLY in the 64-bit kernel + KEXTs will the motivation appear.

I hope I am wrong. But in any case sites like the Planets are here to help.

Apple to Ship Mac OS X Snow Leopard on August 28

To create Snow Leopard, Apple engineers refined 90 percent of the more than 1,000 projects that make up Mac OS X. Users will notice refinements including a more responsive Finder™; Mail that loads messages up to twice as fast;* Time Machine� with an up to 80 percent faster initial backup;* a Dock with Expose� integration; QuickTime� X with a redesigned player that allows users to easily view, record, trim and share video; and a 64-bit version of Safari� 4 that is up to 50 percent** faster and resistant to crashes caused by plug-ins. Das Keyboard offers solution to noise issues.

Austin, TX (PRWEB) August 20, 2009 — Like fingernails tapping on the keys of a piano, “Das Keyboard” can be one of the loudest, clickiest keyboards on the planet. Fortunately for co-workers and significant others, the makers of the high-end keyboard have developed a foolproof solution to the noise: earplugs.

Starting today, Das Keybaord will begin offering earplugs through their online store (www.daskeyboard.com) in addition to both of their current products – the “Professional,” which has labeled keys, and its stealth counterpart, the “Ultimate,” a totally letter-barren keyboard for the expert typist, gamer, or otherwise hardcore user.
The plugs are designed to quiet office hostility by allowing Das Keyboard users to present them as a peace offering to their neighbors. The plugs may also prove handy at NASCAR races, the shooting range, or at 3 a.m. when your spouse is snoring uncontrollably.

“The clicks did bother some of my co-workers at first,” admitted Kyle Ridolfo, a 32-year-old Web developer in New Hampshire, who now owns three Das Keyboards. “One woman came over to me and said, ‘You’re typing too loud!’”

Reminiscent of IBM’s “Model M” keyboard from the 1980s, the Das Keyboard employs mechanical, Cherry MX-style key switches. As typists hit each key, there’s a “click” just before the key hits the end of its stroke and again as it bottoms out. The process leads to faster tactile response and thus faster, more accurate typing. It also feels pretty cool.

Das Keyboard users love the audible feedback sound, but their co-workers often complain that it sounds like the modern child of an electronic typewriter and an arcade machine.

Fortunately, if the earplug gifts fail to quell office anger, Das Keyboard officials say, the 2.6-pound typing machine is sturdy enough to be used as a protective shield. A warning, though: the Das Keyboard is amazing, but it is not yet bulletproof.

Also, the keyboard is not recommended for mothers with sleeping children, hunt-and-peckers who enjoy wallowing on soft keys or spies who need to type in complete silence. Users who returned to membrane-based keyboards complained they felt comparatively squishy and sluggish to Das Keyboard.

Ridolfo said his co-workers adjusted to his clicks and then learned something about him.
“Now everyone is impressed with how fast I can type because they can hear every keystroke,” he said.
