wasn't 1008 released a few weeks ago on their site. I see the date on the file is August 5 but I have 1008 and I got is on the same site a while ago

The BIOS 1008 is dated 05-08-04, both on the US and German sites.

I have these versions:

K8V-ASUS-1008.001 Beta. dated 05-07-04
K8V-ASUS-1008.006 Beta, dated 01-07-04
K8V-ASUS-1008.007 Beta, dated 26-07-04

1008d.001 (Beta), dated 05-07-04

1008d.rom dated 05-08-04

It's the first time I see the NON Beta version on the Asus sites,
and considering it's dated 05-08-04 I think it's the first 1008 officially released bios.

NB. If you look into the files, the 1008d.001 dated 05-07-04, and the 1008d.rom dated 05-08-04, you will see that there is different dates, at the very end of the files. Respectively 08/03/04 and 05/06/04

They normally give very sparse informations, regarding what is supposed to be
fixed. The only thing I can say is, that this bios, as the former one, are stable.

I always install the newest bios available, as well as new releases of drivers.

I am very pleased with the board. Never had so stable a system, like this, before.

im getting an error trying to upgrade my bios. asus update says "the model of bios image doesn't matcg the one of the bios rom please press exit button to exit. what do i do now? it wont connect to the ftp site and download the bios either, it times out

I have the "old" K8V Deluxe board. First revision I think it is. Since I bought the MB, Asus have made several flavors of the K8V. The bios, we are talking about here, is for the K8V Deluxe with 3COM 3C940 Gbit Lan crtl.

Is it the same board you have? You should make sure that the BIOS is intended for exactly your MB.

I use the Asus Update V5.28.01, and run the update from a Win2000 boot'ed system. Asus states that this update version is mandatory for updating to newer BIOS rev.

When running the update prg. I choose the site: ftp.asuscom.de, to get the latest BIOS, which is 1008.
If I choose to update from one of the 2 other sites, it's only possible to update to previous BIOS versions.

If your board is the Asus K8V SE, you can get a newer BIOS here:

The Asus German site has, IMO, alway the latest versions.

No, you are not sad, because the BIOS 1008 version would not have matched your board.

Consider it like this: You develop a BIOS, it's up to you how you christen it. You could chose whatever name it should have, wouldn't matter if you called it George or Gary. or something totally different :-)

Look at it this way. The numbers mean nothing in terms of the features. The numbers are just versions. The features can be the same across different boards. Installing the wrong bios, like trying to get the 1008 will make your computer a paper weight. I have lots of experience with upgrading bios and even I get tense upgrading, because you know that if 1 thing goes wrong, you can fry a board.

I've been a little gun shy upgrading my Bios after the warning about upgrading from 1003 & not being able to get the boot disk technique to work.
Last night i took your advise & Dl & installed the latest Asus Live Update (5.30.xx i think it was), was very careful & ran it & it installed the 1007 Bios like a champ. I am glad i stumbled on this thread finally.

I think it's nice that you bothered scrolling through the threads, finding this rather old posting on subj.

I have only tried flashing with the "Asus Live Update" plus from a bootable floppy disc. Upgrading the BIOS always make me a little shaky, until I have rebooted, and things seems to have gone alright :-)

That's because I also have done the flashing and had bad experiences. The most importing thing is, IMO, not to panic. That's easier said than done, I know.

I once flashed the BIOS, and had no other choice, after the flashing had gone bad, than pulling a working BIOS out of similar Asus board on the fly, installing the bad BIOS, and flashing it back again, while still booted.

With this board, Asus K8V Deluxe, I have once flashed with a Beta BIOS, and the system wouldn't boot after restart. I used the jumper, on the MB, to reset the BIOS, and could boot again.

I'm glad I could be to some help :-)

I thought that explaining this (again) would be easy, but it turned out, that there is more to it.

First go to this site, and download the latest ASUSUpdate application, which is very new, dated 04-11-2004 07:31:00:

The reason for this is, that when you use the ASUSUpdate program, it will tell you that:


The application has detected a newer version
from remote server, please press Next to
update it first.


And even if you have downloaded the latest ASUSUpdate application, from an Asus homepage download place, you will not get the version, of the application, that the link above, point you to. And you will still get the msg:

The application has detected a newer version, update it first etc.


You can try to use the Self-Update method, but I got an error, when the self update executed, after the download sequence was finished. It is possible to have the application downloaded as a *.zip file, as part of the Self-Update session, and you will be asked where to save the file.

In the case you do use the Self-Update method, and you get the error as I did, you can unpack the asusupd53101.zip file, that you saved, unpack it , and install it.

I find it easier to download and install the ASUSUpdate application in the first place.

Now to the BIOS update section :-)

Execute ASUSUpdate ( Programs/Asus/ASUSUpdate) and you are presented with an image, with the text:

Select Update Method

Here you can select which of these options, you want to use:


Save Current BIOS To A File
Update BIOS From A File
Update BIOS From The Internet
Download BIOS From The Internet
Check BIOS Information
Options


Choose:

Download Bios From The Internet

Push: Next

Next Image:

Select The Update Server

Choose:

ftp asuscom de

Next Image:

Select The Bios Version

Please Choose Bios File From The Combo Box

In the Combo Box choose:

K8V Deluxe 1008 Final (05.08.2004)

As I claimed before, the only server that holds the BIOS Ver. 1008, is ftp asuscom de, that is if you use ASUSUpdate when booted in Win2000/WinXP.

You can, however, go to respective Asus sites, and download the 1008 BIOS. The BIOS can then be flashed with ASUSUpdate, when you, at the first image choose:

Update Bios From A File

And point to the BIOS file you just downloaded.

In this case, you can probably use the ASUSUpdate version, that you already have installed. But then again, you still can not use the ASUSUpdate application for future BIOS updates.

Have I confused you? Hope not, as I did spend some time, using my minor English vocabulary, to make everything understandable.

wow, thanks LDJ. Of course it was an obvious solution I was overlooking. I remember now I have already DL'd the 1008 BIOS I just didnt realize you could use ASUS update to flash it from a file... Still I am worried about something going wrong. Anyway is there any news yet on whether ASUS will ever release a bios with a lockable PCI/AGP? Or is that impossible?

I assume that you already have the latest BIOS available for your Asus K8V SE Deluxe? I went to the Asus download page, looked under K8V SE Deluxe, and was shown the latest version of BIOS, for your motherboard, which is 1004.

It's mandatory to only flash a BIOS with the EXACT version, meant for your board. If the flashing program tells you, that the BIOS, your are trying to flash, doesn't match your board, you can be sure it's true!

Am I missing something, or was your question not for me ?

The question PCI/AGP lock: I don't think it's possible for boards, which have the VIA K8T800 chipset.

Boards that comes with VIA K8T800 PRO chipsets should, to my knowledge, be able to lock the PCI/AGP bus.

Don't worry about flashing with the 1008 BIOS. I flashed to that version without problems. Come on now, it's me who is 64 years old :-)

Another thing, it's easy to overlook almost anything, in this PC freaking hobby.

It's only when you do "research", like I had to do, in order to give you an advice, that you really get down into the details.

A couple of month from now, I'll probably have forgotten the details again, and do another "research" for the same issue.

I was a Flight-Mechanic, certified on Boeing 707 passenger aircraft's, until I retired some years ago. To fill that job, you need to read the manuals frequently, or you could end up making serious mistakes, which could be fatal for peoples lives.

But in this PC hobby, you are already on the floor, and mistakes can be corrected without any losses of lives :-)

I have needed to upgrade my BIOS to 1008 now so i printed out your step by step instructions using ASUS update (Aud) & followed them, first upgrading to the 5.31.01 Aud then letting it find the latest @ asus...de & it gave me the 1008 & a 1009-03 Beta choices. Naturally i am conservative so i went w/ the 1008 final.

Bottom Line your tips worked perfectly for me.

I have needed to upgrade my BIOS to 1008 now so i printed out your step by step instructions using ASUS update (Aud) & followed them, first upgrading to the 5.31.01 Aud then letting it find the latest @ asus...de & it gave me the 1008 & a 1009-03 Beta choices. Naturally i am conservative so i went w/ the 1008 final.

I think You made the right decision :-)

I can't stop myself from trying what's possible, so of course I have tried the 1009-003 beta, just to make sure I didn't miss any possibilities.

The "usual" happened. It wouldn't start win2000, stopped at a point. It could start in safe mode though. From safe mode you can't flash the Bios. :-(

I booted into DOS with a floppy disk, and flashed with the Bios 1005, in order to get Windows started. Finally, when booted to Windows, I then ran the flash program, which couldn't find any Asus MB :-(

Then I copied the 1008 Bios, together with the latest awdflash (DOS flash program) to the bootable DOS diskette. Booted with the DOS floppy disk again, and flashed the Bios with the 1008 version, restarted the system.

NOW IT WOULD NO LONGER BOOT!

Removed the towers side panel, in order to get access to the reset jumper.Found that the jumper is located beneath the IceQ heath thing, which is mounted to the GFX Radeon 9800 Pro, and takes up the space for the first pci connector, and realized that it would demand some extended work, to do the resetting with the jumper.

Well, at that time I felt a little p****d of, and thought I would let it wait for some time. I switched of the power, that connects the computer to the mains power connector, and left it for as long as it takes to smoke a pipe of tobacco.

Back again, I switched the power on. AND THE SYSTEM BOOTED!!

So I have tried the 1009 beta. for the first, and probably last time, unless I feel bored one day, and decide to try it again :-)

One strange thing I did observe, with the 1009 beta, was that there was no mentioning of "Press F2 to load system defaults"

The Amd 4000, is it socket 754? And is your MB Asus K8v DL?

If your MB is the Asus K8V Deluxe, you don't have to worry about using the AsusUpdate program to update the Bios. Just go ahead with the advice, I have given.

Not the one I wrote, regarding the 1009-003 beta :-)

I probably missed something, as I read your msg. as if you don't you have a GFX card yet?
