ok how do i find out if the lag im getting in games is my fault or just crappy servers, even when i pick low ping servers i get lag, sometimes a really annoying amount and sometimes its not to bad but i always get it.ive been googling and most of the stuff ive read seems to suggest that it is badly run servers,ie http://www.racelinecentral.com/RLC_Documents/Lag_to_FPS.htm but the more i read the more confusing it gets, memory, cpu, gpu, isp and game settings are all mentioned.i have a 2mb BT broadband connection and a wireless router (could the router be the prob).any help greatly appreciated as im coming close to punching my puter every time i get 'lag killed' .

what game are you talkingabout. BF2 is well known for server lag. the way i usually tell is by Asking people i am playing with if they are getting lag. with bf2 most of the time it is the server. sometimes it has to be my ISP. it would be hard to say it is my comp. I have noticed sometimes out of the blue my internet service seems to slow down for a minute or 2 then jump back. it could also justbe people going to my website which is on my serve sharing the same internet connection.

palmer has it about right...

BF2 is a really laggy game.. very little you can do to improve this, its generaly not your fault

check your wireless signal strength as a bad signal could be doing this, put yourself back on an ethernet connection to rule it out.

kill off any antivirus when playing (especially if you use Norton). that is a known killer of BF2 and causes problems with a lot of online games

make sure your hd is regularly defragged (try diskeeper rather than windows own)

Get more ram... 512 dont help BF2 at all. I noticed a major improvement when i upgraded from 1Gb to 2Gb

BF2 lagged very little for me until the 1.3 patch. EA really screwed up with this one. But, yes all the battle field games have been notorious for lag.

Have you ever wonderd what these games would be like without lag? lol Try updating your router's firmware. Mine(linksys wtg54r) was several versions behind and i didnt even realize it. Also, cable connections can be highly variable which can cause problems like you mentioned. I get connection interuptions every once in a while and its always laggy to some degree. Also some server's are better than others. Try re pinging a server a few times before joining.
