Google’s Chrome
A few days ago I published an article on some disturbing issues with Google’s new browser Chrome. Many people feel the issues that I (and many others) have raised are not a big concern due to Chrome only being a BETA. But the issues that have been uncovered this far are only the tip of the iceberg. After a few days of testing I have discovered some very disturbing items about Chrome. I had read some articles about the security issues myself. Decided to wait and see what Ath had found before I posted.
http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=1843 http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=1847 It looks the above were patched, but it stills leaves the WebKit 525.13 (Safari 3.1) vulnerability. The same flaw that was used to take an Apple laptop, running Leopard a few months a go. I'm sure some of you remember the hacking competition, where they tried to compromise 3 different laptops. One running Vista, one running Linux (I think it was Ubuntu), and one running Leopard. Anyhow the running Leopard was taken over in just hours, by a flaw in Safari. I believe that is the same flaw in WebKit 525.13 which is used in Google Chrome. Oh yeah here's another article http://www.informationweek.com/news/intern...cleID=210500290 I had Chrome installed for about an hour, and kinda liked it. Simple and fast, and I liked the way you could drag tabs around, also like the way you could download with it, especially saving photo from a webpage (just drag em to the desktop). It's too bad, it's not secure. As as collecting info, IE and Firefox at least ask you if you would like to send info to make the browser better. I'm sure Google would be collecting much, much more than IE or Firefox though. Google wants to download the entire internet. I won't use the Google toolbar, or any 3rd party browser extension as far as that goes. But especially not Google's. I'm kinda leery about using Gmail too, one of my Gmail accounts gets 300 to 400 spam message a day (some with my name, and home town listed in them). But I don't know if that's entirely Gmail or just the sites I use that e-mail address on? |

according to people I talked to, there are many many more exploits that are left overs from Safari 3.
It seems to me that Chrome (much like the EULA) is hobbled together from other apps. It does do intensive reads a writes to the System Volume Information folder during any idle times that all by itself is enough to scare me off from it. I have outlawed its use where I work and others I know in the field have followed suit. |
