CUPERTINO, Calif., May 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Apple® today announced that it sold its one millionth iPad™ on Friday, just 28 days after its introduction on April 3. iPad users have already downloaded over 12 million apps from the App Store and over 1.5 million ebooks from the new iBookstore. “One million iPads in 28 days—that’s less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Demand continues to exceed supply and we’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more customers.” iPad allows users to connect with their apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before. Users can browse the web, read and send email, enjoy and share photos, watch HD videos, listen to music, play games, read ebooks and much more, all using iPad’s revolutionary Multi-Touch™ user interface. iPad is 0.5 inches thin and weighs just 1.5 pounds—thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook—and delivers up to 10 hours of battery life.* Developers have created over 5,000 exciting new apps for iPad that take advantage of its Multi-Touch user interface, large screen and high-quality graphics. iPad will run almost all of the more than 200,000 apps on the App Store, including apps already purchased for your iPhone® or iPod touch®. *Battery life depends on device settings, usage and other factors. Actual results vary. Apple ignited the personal computer revolution with the Apple II, then reinvented the personal computer with the Macintosh. Apple continues to lead the industry with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system, and iLife, iWork and professional applications. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store, has reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and has recently introduced its magical iPad which is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices. © 2010 Apple Inc. Great video, even my wife laughed. As for as them selling one million iPads. I wish I had trouble believing that. The list of what it can't do, when compaired to any simularly priced computing device, is far longer than what it can do. So lets see, apple spends money to hire a designer to make a bunch of third or fourth rate parts look cool then charge twice what the parts are worth and everyone rushes to buy it. Apple does it again. A new way to screw over thier customers by making them think they are using cutting edge technology when in fact the only thing cutting edge is the price. |

The iPad is a consumer device, plain and simple. It is for people who want to do cool stuff on the internet and run apps and don't want to be bothered with operating systems, cantankerous app installs, etc.. It harkens back to the terminal days of computing: all of the techie stuff was installed on the big iron by guys who knew and understood that kind of stuff and the users just logged on and worked. Systems management was for system managers, not users. iPad brings this back 21st century style, with a multi-touch interface, slick graphics, smooth multimedia, wireless communications all in a trim little package that weighs less than a pound. Can you do this stuff with a laptop or tablet? Yes, but you have to deal with the baggage that comes with it. I'm not saying that iPad doesn't have baggage (it does), just that the bags are much smaller. I can see myself using this device in my photography. Why have the customer schlep all the way to your studio to see proofs in a dark little room, when you can do it on a small device that is easy to use (and you know the colors will look good) and adds a wow factor to your business? Content creators won't use the iPad (and all of the similar devices bound to show up after it) as a primary, just as a means of displaying and accessing what they have created. |

There's obviously a market for it, although my personal suspicion is that being "trendy" has a LOT to do with the ipad sales. I've got a few friends who are all about mac products, and I know several of them went to their apple store on launch day and got one. They never wanted a tablet before, and in truth, don't use the ipad all that much. I'm definitely a hardware geek, so it's not for me really. I've been shopping for a house lately and I would definitely see a use for a tablet device for a realtor, or anyone who runs around like that all day. My Realtor doesn't have one but if I was to do that for a living I would get one in a heartbeat; although probably another brand device. As it is, though I sit on my fat bottom in front of a large screen instead... I think apple's made a major mistake in shunning adobe. Adobe is a significant part of apple's success, and today if you're doing anything serious with adobe products (video OR still) you should be using cs5 on a pc. Why? Because the 64 bit cuda stuff in cs5 is pc only, and the productivity increase you'd get with a mere $400 gtx 470 vs even a top end multiprocessor xeon system cannot be overlooked. |

To me, anyone owning an iPad is telling me iFail in that they are more concerned about appearance than actual functionality. I will admit that both Guru and Kelemvor have a point; there are a very few instances where an iPad would actually be useful. I still think it is an overpriced piece of outdated tech, as a computing device there is nothing new and cool about it as I see it. As a special purpose appliance, there was a line of HDTVs a few years ago that did almost everything an iPad could do without Apple hype. As for the Adobe situation that Kelemvor addressed, I personally have NEVER liked flash or anybody's elses work alikes (such as MS's Silver whatever) and would not mind if it (they) went away entirely. From the day it was introduced I complained and railed about it. Adobe makes a lot of very good applications, I even own a few of thier apps. One of the reasons I use the 64Bit version of IE is that Flash does not support 64bit, which I see as a god send. I have far too many security concerns with Flash and Acrobat to allow either to be used on my computers freely. It really hurts that I will have to praise Apple for banning the development of "applications" using Flash. I am not sure that Flash scripts really can be called applications, it is not like they can be run with just a fairly small run time file. At the same time, I will have to laugh my head off at just how over priced the proper development kit is, when you take into consideration the actuall size of the market. When I last checked, a few months ago, all of Apple consisted of less than 15% the entire market for computing devices. If you consider that almost anyone can get the Windows Development kit for free it is hard to justify spending thousands for one sixth the market. Can a developer make a profit, yes if they severly limit the development time. A developer for Apple needs to be very careful. Adobe use to be an Apple only shop, in the early 90s then started releasing a few applications for the PC by porting applications to Windows. Now Adobe develops the majority of their development to Windows and ports to Apple Macs. The Apple (Mac) market was just too small to support Adobe. It is a shame that WindowsMobile 7 is such a bloated pig that no one seems to be able to make it work quickly and stablely. |

There are a few instances where flash is beneficial, and most browsers don't even fully support HTML5 yet (firefox 3.6 only partially does). However, my statements about adobe were really more focused on their bigger products like Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, After Effects, Dreamweaver etc. Flash will continue to be important on the net for at least 2 more years is my guess though; and being that the FTC and US DOJ are filing an antitrust suit against Apple over their recent change in policies that you mentioned, I am guessing the Flash -> iApp conversion thing will be back in no time. |

All those products are (to the best of my knowledge) now developed on and for the Windows platform then ported to Apples version of BSD. I still don't really understand how they managed to get BSD as everything Apple stands for is against the standard EULA, but that is beside the point. I don't think that any of those applications were ever intended to be run on an iPad. Remember the iPad is an oversized iPhone with a few redeaming features removed. Flash will continue to be important on the net for at least 2 more years is my guess though; and being that the FTC and US DOJ are filing an antitrust suit against Apple over their recent change in policies that you mentioned, I am guessing the Flash -> iApp conversion thing will be back in no time. As for the FTC & US DOJ filings, it has not happened yet. Right now all they did was start an investigation, again. I think this will be their third or forth investigation into Apple's platform. My reason's for hating Flash are fairly straight forward. 1) Until recently, once installed there was no way to control how or what it did. To this day, there are no local controls at all. Adobe has setup a site that allows some configuration control, but I would rather the controls were local, not located on some cloud some where. 2) Security, Flash has a long history of having more security holes and gotchas the Linux (which last I read was actually twice as bad as Windows). 3) Even with the Flash's cloud and browser configurations set to maximize security, it can still track almost everything you do and every where you go and there is nothing we can do about it. Which is why flash is a favorite of advisters. I don't see flash going anywhere for the forseeable future. Back on topic; Did everyone see that some guy in the UK modded his US iPad to make one work in the UK? He now has a working iPad over a month before they are "legally" available in the UK. |

I am certain I saw a video of someone running Win95 on an iPad as well. As for the license, the bsd terms are such that you can make derivative works from the source without providing your source if you merely credit the original authors I believe. It's not the same as the linux licenses you're used to seeing (GPL). QUOTE(Wikipedia) Proprietary software licenses compatibility The BSD License allows proprietary use, and for the software released under the license to be incorporated into proprietary products. Works based on the material may be released under a proprietary license or as closed source software. This is the reason for widespread use of the BSD code in proprietary products, ranging from Juniper Networks routers to Mac OS X.[10] It is possible for something to be distributed with the BSD License and some other copyright to apply as well. This was in fact the case with early versions of BSD itself, which included proprietary material from AT&T. Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bsd_license#P...s_compatibility |
