As someone that is expected to fix everyone’s computer in my family, there is nothing more than “WOOT!” that can be said about a product that makes my family obligations easier. My family isn’t exactly the most “in touch” when it comes to computing (you will read an article / rant soon about that) and they make a bunch of dumb mistakes… most of which ends up with them contracting a I.T.D. (Internet Transmitted Disease, a.k.a. VIRUS!). That’s when the frenzy starts, the claims that the world is collapsing, the seas are rising, they can’t send email! I must work quickly and efficiently to alleviate their ailments. With that said, products like the USI-2535 makes my job easier.

With all of the hype surrounding SSDs (solid state drives) these days, you might think that hard drive technology is already dead. Indeed, flash-based storage will certainly replace high-end hard drives in the months and years to come. One of the first victims will be the 3.5” form factor in enterprise applications. Specifically, 10,000 and 15,000 RPM SAS drives will be replaced by 2.5” drives. We compared both form factors at 15,000 RPM.

AMD is always adding new chips to their lineup to fill any gap that you can imagine. Today we have the Phenom II X2 555. This chip comes clocked slightly higher than its younger brother, the 550. This stock clock will show some improvement, but who runs a Black Edition CPU at its rated speed? The whole reason for buying this chip is its unlocked multiplier for overclocking. The Phenom II also provides the L3 cache that the Athlon II lineup lacks, adding some additional performance. Since the start of the Phenom II manufacturing AMD has been getting better at manufacturing these chips. This is leading to an amazing unlock rate for the disabled cores on these chips. Armed with our 890 GX chipset board we will attempt to unlock the two hidden cores, and get this chip to extreme clocks. Lets dive into what should be a good time!

Knowing ASrock as a company that usually pumps out zillions of colourfull entry level boards, sometimes innovating by integrating older technology like eg AGP slots onto new platforms, makes them stand out from the crowd. Sadly when you mention ASrock, most immediately are thinking about cheap hardware, correlating it with poor build quality and durability, lack of features... Well let me tell you this 890GX board is absolutely bullet proof.
