Full Version: A8S-X unstable with 4GB and memory hole remapping

Hi everybody,

Now i really need your help.

Here's my computer:

AMD 3800 X2
A8S-X
4 GB Kingston DDR400 (4x1G)
Geforce 7600GS 256 PCI-E
2 SATA Drives (160+250G)

1- I had Vista 32-bits installed with 2G with no problem at all.
2- I installed 2 GB more, now 4 GB, Vista 32-bits only sees 3096MB. (tried PAE and everything with no success)
3- So I did a clean install of Vista x64
4- Many BSOD until I disable the memory hole remapping in the BIOS and continue the installation.

5a- With memory remapping ENABLED, the BIOS and Vista detects 4095 GB RAM. The system boots but is VERY unstable, many services stops working, hangs, many display artefacts, NO LAN, no mouse, and finally, a nvlddmkm.sys exception that seems related to the forceware drivers (updated and dating june 1st).

5b- With memory remapping DISABLED, the BIOS and vista detects 3072 GB of RAM, the system is stable.

NB :
- I installed the hotfix for more than 3GB on Vista x64... nothing better...
- I tried Windows XP 64-bits, still the same, with memory remapping enabled and 4GB, the system is completly unstable during 5 minutes until a BSOD.
- Some thing if I downclock memory to DDR333.
- Memory diagnostic is okay.

Any clues ?

Is there anyone who've been able to run 4GB on that mobo ?

Thanks alot.

Update the BIOS maybe? If you have the latest BIOS, then perhaps it's manufacturing defect and you need to RMA the mobo.

Hello buddhatree,

Thanks for your suggestions but I updated the BIOS to the latest version (v.1001). But what do you mean by "to RMA the mobo" ?

Thanks

RMA = return merchandise authorization. It means send it back to the manufacturer for replacement.

Put one stick in slot 1 and test with memtest86 boot cd. If all four sticks pass, one at a time. Test in pairs. Find out if that RAM is matched to the board. I have had problems with Kingston in the past. I use Samsung or Corsair. Are all four sticks matched? Try them in XP Pro x64 instead of Vista. Is your board Vista ready? If it is an older board, it might not fully support Vista.

Thanks alot.

I would get matching ram for the board.

You'll probably kick yourself when you solve this... just install vista 64 with 3gb or less of ram, install this patch http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=929777 and then pop your ram back in. Problem solved.
It's a hack of a workaround...but it does the job (I know, I've been there)
I rma'd my ram too... :(

I don't think it is ASUS Motherboard's problem.

why?

Because I use Epox MF570SLI, Windows xp x64 and 4G ram can not work together too!

it must a windows xp x64/ vista bug.

Set the RAM to DDR333 instead of DDR400.

The orignal post states DDR400 RAM.

Is Vista x64 compatible with this board? Did you do a full install of Vista x64 with this board. If other OS work without an issue, I would say its Vista x64 that is the problem.
SCSIraidGURU
XP x64 is very picky with RAM in 64-bit mode. Much more than any 32-bit OS. So you need to stay to the standards of the board.

Here is what Kingston states about the memory.

If you want to use 4 sticks, these are the ones you want. You can't run DDR400 on that board with 4 sticks.

Description: 2GB 333MHz DDR Non-ECC CL2.5 DIMM (Kit of 2)
Detailed Specifications: Standard 128M X 64 Non-ECC 333MHz 184-pin Unbuffered DIMM (SDRAM-DDR, 2.5V, CL2.5, Gold) (Datasheet)
Mfgr's System P/N's: N/A
Form Factor: Memory Module
Pieces/Unit: 2
Warranty: Lifetime†

See below.

Standard Memory: 0 MB (Removable)

Maximum Memory: 2 GB using 400MHz DDR modules
4 GB using 333MHz or 266MHz DDR modules

Expansion: 4 Sockets

CPU & ChipSet: AMD Athlon 64 FX (939-pin) SiS 756
AMD Athlon 64 SiS 756
AMD Athlon 64 X2 SiS 756

Bus Architecture: PCI; PCI Express; USB

Mfgr's System P/N's: N/A

Comments MODULES MUST BE ORDERED AND INSTALLED IN PAIRS for Dual Channel mode. Kingston offers "K2" Kit part numbers for Dual Channel mode. All modules must be identical for Dual Channel with Dynamic Mode.

This system supports ECC (X72) and non-ECC (X64) memory. When mixing ECC and non-ECC modules, the system will not perform the ECC function.

If 4GB is installed, the recognized memory may be reduced to 3.5GB or less (depending on system configuration and memory allocation).

I had the same issue where I got BSOD or a simple restart with Vista x64 on my Tyan MOBO. I am posting this because this fix will apply to boards other than Acer. I have a Tyan 2915 and could not add more than 2GB w/o BSOD. Now is has detected 4GB without changing BIOS memory hole mapping. bassgoonist, thankfully I read your post before RMAing my memory. For some reason Windows update didn;t DL this fix automatically.

THANKS!
