Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows XP for AMD64 will come with Data Execution Prevention technology built-in which will prevent some nasty code to run on our computers. More about DEP can be read
here. Some apps are not meant to harm you but because of the way they are writen they might not run and you will get an error message about them. So this topic is here to collect those incompatible apps

To add to the list.
Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 and Flash MX 2004 do not work with Data Execution Prevention.
However work fine when its disabled.
OK. I'm adding them to the list. Please send them an e-mail to let them know about the problem.

The Steam client launching a game complains about DEP.
Archive User
Aug 8 2004, 12:24 AM
I dont know about the other programs but I know for fact Ad-aware works with DEP. I have v6.181 installed and DEP enabled and Ad-aware is working fantastic as usual.
EDIT 1: hmm, are you talking about programs that DEP complained about upon the programs first launch? If so I dont remember if DEP complained or not. All I know is Ad-aware is working fine... please be more specific here... it sounds like your stating that these programs do not work with DEP enabled...
EDIT 2: I just used Adobe Update Manager and DEP poped up with a window that stoped the update process but allowed me to turn off DEP for Adobe Update Manager. Also at that time I noticed Ad-aware was in the list of allowed apps so I must have turned it off for Ad-aware too. I don't see this as a big deal, atleast it lets me know DEP is more aggresive than tame...

Well it does sound like it since it is stated around the paragraph about programs that will have problems with DEP enabled.

Yeah the error message is DEP telling you it didnt like what was going on, so it gives you the ability to turn off DEP for that particular app. This is perfectly fine with me as long as it doesnt hinder the use of the app.

Add WindowBlinds to the mix. I confirmed it DEP does NOT allow WindowBlinds to properly configure themes if DEP is enabled. In order for WB to work DEP had to be completely disabled.... That is bad news for me...
EDIT: BTW, this is for 32-bit WinXP I had the problem.

I have a funny feeling a lot of people, who have no idea what they are doing when they sit in front of their computers , are going to have a lot of problems with sp2...tis a wonder what a bit of knowledge can do...
Anyways....why is it bad news....you really think you need DEP?

If I go to start - help and support it won't open because of DEP and if I click "what is it?" on the DEP warning thing, that won't even execute. And Also, I don't know if it is DEP but search won't execute..
How can I turn DEP off?

we are talking about XP32 SP2 correct? if so I have SP2 slipstreamed and have none of those problems what so ever. I have noticed that DEP does interfere with some apps but all so far have been non-microsoft software in my case... The OS and its included apps is running as good as ever...

It contains a lot more than just security fixes. This is a major update with literally hundreds of fixes. If I were you I would use SP2 and just disable anything you dont like, like DEP for instance.

SP2 has a lot of usefull security features. The biggest one is the buffer exploit risk. All the code in Windows SP2 was recompiled to avoid buffer
overflows. This alone will stop 70% of attacks and is probably the one
biggest reason to get SP2.

Microsoft Services for UNIX v3.5 is kind of broken with DEP as well. Random applications will fail to dlopen or execute external modules or processes, such as gcc crashing when spawning cc1/cc1plus or collect2, GIMP attempting to load plug-ins. Other applications will crash or fail to start properly, such as bash and rxvt.
The problem seems to affect the Interix subsystem module itself, which is a service, so it will affect even 32-bit Windows when DEP is configured to the default of protecting core services. Annoyingly, the crashes which occur under this subsystem are not specially logged as DEP, and simply register as segmentation faults. The only solution at this time is to disable DEP completely.

As Jstelly says, loading Steam (by Valve) sparks DEP too as well as its Cheating Death counterpart.

Right-Click My Computer, choose Properties, Click the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery click Settings, when this box pops up you'll see System Startup, there is an Edit button that'll open the file you'll want to edit and then save and exit, reboot and you have completed the steps needed to disable DEP.

I have been able to run Macromedia Studio MX 2004 without a hitch (including Dreamweaver and Flash 2004).
OTOH, I did run into a problem today where Office XP refused to install because of a DEP issue.

This is an old list, but for what it's worth Alcohol 120%/52% will not run if DEP is set to OptOut or AlwaysOn. If set to OptIn or AlwaysOff, then it works just fine (or if added to the exclusions list). That should be fixed in a future update.

Terrible problem with this now.
Recently, over the past week or so, any programs that use the Windows installer have just stopped installing because of DEP. I don't have a clue why. I've tried changing every single setting about DEP that I can find, added programs to the list for which DEP is off etc.
It wasn't like this a week or so ago.
Has anyone got any advice?
I'd like to be able to update MSN, and reinstall Java sometime soon.

I'm using AdAware 6 & Prime95 (although they have released a 64-bit version at this point), and seen no problems at all with DEP enabled.

That was the problem I had when installing Office XP. Tried reinstalling Windows Installer, everything with no luck. I wound up reinstalling x64 to get the installer working right (fortunately, if you reinstall over an existing x64 setup, it doesn't require you to reformat and install from scratch).

Did you install the update for x64? It's an update for the Microsft Installer, but afterwards I couldn't install Java. I had to uninstall the update from Add/Remove Programs and then it installed fine.

Though I reinstalled the update, I installed what I needed in between then and reinstalling.

I had some major problems after enabling DEP (it didn't help that I'd forgotten I'd enabled it! -took ages to work out what was wrong)
Winamp 5 -- Jump to file feature doesn't seem to work properly when DEP is on - indeed it completely removes itself from Winamp (the extended version which is now installed by default with winamp... contains options like Enqueue)
BitTornado (www.bittornado.com) -- crashed with Unknown Software Exception error whenever I ran it with DEP turned on. Now works fine
Cheers

also by clicking on my photoshop exe on my c drive xp32 that starts also without having to reinstall it in xp64. fireworks asks for the serial number after that its ok.

I disabled it in system setup and boot.ini by adding /noexecute=AlwaysOff /pae.
/pae turns back on NUMA for those with NUMA memory management supported. DEP is MS lame attempt at protecting our computers. I wish MS would spend more time shrinking the size of the OS and fixing the problems. Most of the security s*** they added, I disabled. It only managed to cause more app problems. Bill Gates has to learn, MS does not know how to protect my workstation.

DEP can be turned off by editing the Boot ini file, or you could turn it
off all together by Nlite and live without it.
So i would like to turn the table, are there any app or otherwise that DEPEND on having DEP enabled?
We have firewalls, anti virus, spy ware killers/prevents, anti trojan, IP protection, wlan protection and what not, to prevent dirty code from intruding or destroing, our systems.
I vaguely remember i did turn it off and noticed some actual noticeable
performance boost. So... If the enviroment is secured and all, kill it?
